Moving Checklist

There is no denying that moving is stressful! That's why we strive to make it as straightforward and hassle free as possible. Utilizing this Moving Checklist will help ensure you have everything in order for your future move.

Create a space for all of your moving needs.

If you like to have something tangible, create a moving binder or folder. If you prefer digital, create a moving spreadsheet or Google Doc. This will be a space to store all of your moving documents and other information for your upcoming move. This checklist should be the first thing included in your binder (:

Collect and organize all moving documents.

Store and keep track of all documents relating to your move, including moving estimates and final bills.

Identify and organize all upcoming appointments.

These include appointments related to your move such as connecting/disconnecting/transferring utilities, scheduling inspections and enrolling children in school.

Measure large furniture.

Save yourself stress by knowing ahead of time if a large piece of furniture won't be able to fit through the front door. Measuring your furniture well in advance will give you time to brainstorm alternative methods for moving if needed.

Take inventory of important items by room.

This is especially important if you decide to hire a moving company and will come in helpful if you need to file a claim for lost, stolen or damaged property.

Sell or donate unwanted items.

Moving into a new home is the perfect opportunity to get rid of items you no longer want or need, making your move even easier. Every bit counts!

Request time off work if needed.

If you anticipate your move to take longer than a weekend, or maybe it falls within the work week, you will want to request time off work sooner than later.

Deep clean.

Deep cleaning your home is a good way to organize all of your items and will be necessary for a refunded security deposit if you are currently renting.

Determine how you want to execute your move.

Do you want to hire movers, complete the move by yourself or something in between? Decide what works best for you and begin to schedule movers, uhauls or help from friends and family depnding on what you decide.

Collect and label moving boxes.

Contact local stores and see if they have any free boxes you can use. If you call ahead of time, there's a good chance you can supply all of the boxes you need without any cost. As  you collect boxes, you can start to pack and label them over time.

Contact your utility providers.

Call your utility providers about 4 weeks before your scheduled move to ensure they are set up and ready to go once you're there.

Fill and transfer prescriptions.

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home and realize you're out of needed prescription medicines. Be prepared and fill them before you move or have them transferred to your nearest pharmacy.

Change your address.

About two weeks before your move, you'll want to file a change of address with the USPS here. Let any other businesses know of your new address as well, such as banks or insurance companies and update your driver's license, auto insurance and care registration.

Confirm important moving dates.

These dates should already be in your moving binder. You will want to go through and make sure there are no changes.

Collect all keys and garage door openers.

You will need to turn these items in to your real estate agent, new tenants or leasing office before moving out.

Schedule a final walk-through of your new home.

This is to ensure you know where to find things like the water heater, circuit breakers and water shut-off valves.

Finish packing.

To save everyone the hassle on move in day and prevent as much stress as possible, be sure everything is packed before move in day.
